Braces

layer-7

At Smile Art Orthodontics, we exclusively use self-ligating brackets (metal or clear). These are high-tech, low-friction braces that have many advantages over traditional braces. They eliminate the need of elastic or metal ties which means less irritation, less plaque-accumulation and less difficulty in maintaining good oral hygiene. In addition, the low friction helps teeth to move easier, reducing overall treatment time, with fewer adjustments and shorter appointments.

Metal Braces

These are made of high grade stainless steel and have been around for ages. However, the modern ones are smaller, more esthetic and more comfortable then their predecessors.

Clear Braces

These are translucent ceramic braces that are more aesthetically pleasing than the metal ones.

Diagram of Braces

The diagram illustrates and names each part of a typical set of braces.

A. Ligature
The archwire is held to each bracket with a ligature, which can be either a tiny elastic circle or a twisted wire.

B. Archwire
The archwire is tied to all of the brackets and creates force to move teeth into proper alignment.

C. Brackets
Brackets are connected to the bands, or directly bonded on the teeth, and hold the archwire in place.

D. Metal Band
The band is the cemented ring of metal which wraps around the tooth. These are usually placed only on the back molar teeth.

E. Elastic Hooks & Rubber Bands
Elastic hooks are used for the attachment of rubber bands, which help move teeth toward their final position.
